PE Curriculum Rationale

At Rosebrook Primary School, our PE curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils leave us physically literate and with the knowledge, skills, and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport. We believe that high-quality PE provides an opportunity to develop the child as a whole, which is why we employ a full-time sports coach who works alongside teachers to ensure they are fully equipped to deliver a high-quality PE curriculum following the Get set for PE scheme of work.

Our PE curriculum is aligned with the requirements of the National Curriculum, which states that “a high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.” We have carefully crafted our curriculum to ensure that it not only meets these requirements but also addresses the unique needs and challenges of our school community.

Given the high levels of deprivation and the significant number of pupils with SEND in our school, we recognise the importance of providing a curriculum that is both inclusive and aspirational. Our PE curriculum is designed to expose our pupils to a wide range of sports and activities, many of which they may not have had the opportunity to experience outside of school. This approach not only broadens their horizons but also helps to develop their physical literacy and confidence, which are essential for leading a healthy, active lifestyle.

Moreover, our PE curriculum is closely aligned with the school’s overall improvement priorities, particularly in the areas of reading comprehension, oracy, and writing attainment. We have incorporated opportunities for pupils to develop their language skills, both in terms of understanding and using subject-specific vocabulary, as well as their ability to communicate effectively during team activities and sports.

Whole School Aims

Our PE curriculum is fully aligned with the school’s vision and values, which are centred around the belief that “we can be whatever we dream.” Through our DREAM core values of Determination, Respect, Enthusiasm, Ambition, and Growth Mindset, we aim to inspire our pupils to reach their full potential, both academically and physically.

The PE curriculum plays a crucial role in supporting the development of these core values, as it provides opportunities for pupils to challenge themselves, work collaboratively, and develop a sense of pride and ownership in their achievements. By fostering a climate of high expectations and celebrating both individual and team successes, we aim to instil in our pupils a belief that they can achieve their dreams, regardless of their starting point or background.

Subject Vision

At Rosebrook Primary School, we believe that physical education is a vital component of a well-rounded education. Through our PE curriculum, we aim to empower our pupils to become confident, competent, and enthusiastic participants in a wide range of physical activities and sports. We want our pupils to develop a deep understanding of the importance of physical activity for their overall health and well-being, and to cultivate a lifelong love of movement and physical expression.

Our PE curriculum is designed to not only develop physical skills and fitness but also to foster important social and emotional skills, such as teamwork, communication, and resilience. By providing opportunities for pupils to engage in both individual and team-based activities, we aim to support the development of the whole child, aligning with the school’s overall improvement priorities and vision.

We offer a range of after-school clubs run by the sports coach and other staff members across the year. Some pupils get the opportunity to participate in local competitions with other schools and schools across the trust. We have had the school site mapped and offer an orienteering programme for KS2 pupils.

Communication with Stakeholders

To ensure the successful implementation of our PE curriculum, we will engage in regular and transparent communication with all stakeholders, including parents, carers, and the wider school community. This will involve sharing our curriculum rationale and vision through a variety of channels, such as the school website, newsletters, and parent-teacher meetings.

We will also seek to involve parents and carers in the delivery of our PE curriculum, by inviting them to attend special events, such as sports days or showcases, and by encouraging them to support their children’s participation in extracurricular physical activities. By fostering a strong partnership between the school and the community, we aim to reinforce the importance of physical education and its role in supporting the overall development and well-being of our pupils.

Addressing Inspection Feedback

The recent Ofsted inspection feedback highlighted several areas of strength in our PE curriculum, including the strong focus on developing pupils’ language skills and the effective support provided for pupils with SEND. The inspection also identified some areas for improvement, such as the need to ensure that the curriculum is consistently strong across all foundation subjects, including science and geography.

Our PE curriculum rationale directly addresses these areas of concern. By aligning our PE curriculum with the school’s overall improvement priorities, we are ensuring that it not only meets the requirements of the National Curriculum but also supports the development of essential skills and knowledge across the broader curriculum. Additionally, our commitment to providing high-quality, inclusive PE lessons, led by a dedicated sports coach, demonstrates our dedication to ensuring that all pupils, regardless of their starting point or additional needs, have the opportunity to succeed and excel in physical activity and sport.
