Music Curriculum Rationale
At Rosebrook Primary School, we have carefully selected the Charanga music programme to deliver our music curriculum. This decision was made to address the developing skill set among our teaching staff in delivering high-quality music education, while also providing a progressive, fully resourced, and cost-effective solution that can be accessed both in school and at home.
The Charanga music programme aligns closely with the requirements of the National Curriculum for music. It provides a well-structured and sequenced approach to developing pupils’ musical skills and knowledge across the key areas of performing, composing, and listening. The programme ensures that pupils make progress in their technical, constructive, and expressive musical abilities, which are essential for a well-rounded music education.
The Charanga programme is particularly suitable for the pupils at Rosebrook Primary School, as it is designed to be accessible and engaging for children of all abilities. Given the high proportion of pupils with SEND and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, the scaffolding and differentiation built into the Charanga resources will help to remove barriers to learning and ensure that all pupils can access and succeed in the music curriculum.
Furthermore, the Charanga programme is aspirational in its approach, challenging pupils to develop their musical skills and knowledge over time. The progressive nature of the curriculum, with clear progression in the technical, constructive, and expressive aspects of music, will enable our pupils to achieve high standards and develop a deep appreciation and understanding of music.
Whole School Aims
The Charanga music curriculum aligns seamlessly with Rosebrook Primary School’s vision and values. Our DREAM core values of Determination, Respect, Enthusiasm, Ambition, and Growth Mindset are at the heart of the music programme, as it encourages pupils to approach their musical learning with resilience, respect for others, and a belief in their own potential.
The school’s vision of “we can be whatever we dream” is reflected in the Charanga curriculum, which provides opportunities for all pupils to explore and develop their musical talents, regardless of their starting points. By nurturing a love of music and providing a high-quality music education, we aim to empower our pupils to reach their full potential and become well-rounded, confident individuals.
Subject Vision
At Rosebrook Primary School, we believe that music is a fundamental part of a child’s education. Through the Charanga music curriculum, we aim to instill a lifelong appreciation and understanding of music in our pupils. We want our pupils to develop the technical skills to perform and compose music, the constructive knowledge to understand the elements of music, and the expressive abilities to interpret and communicate musical meaning.
By delivering a progressive and engaging music curriculum, we aim to address the school’s improvement priorities in areas such as reading comprehension, oracy, and writing attainment. The Charanga programme provides opportunities for pupils to develop their vocabulary, communication skills, and creative expression, which will have a positive impact across the curriculum.
Communication with Stakeholders
To ensure the successful implementation of the Charanga music curriculum, we will engage with all stakeholders to communicate the rationale and benefits of this approach. This will include:
- Informing parents and carers about the Charanga programme through school newsletters, social media, and parent information sessions. We will emphasise the importance of music education and how the Charanga resources can be accessed at home to support their child’s learning.
- Providing comprehensive training and support for all teaching staff to build their confidence and skills in delivering the Charanga music lessons. This will include ongoing professional development opportunities and collaborative planning sessions to share best practises.
- Involving the school’s music lead in regular monitoring and evaluation of the Charanga curriculum, ensuring that it is being implemented effectively and meeting the needs of all pupils. Feedback from staff, pupils, and parents will be used to refine and improve the delivery of the music curriculum.
- Communicating the school’s music curriculum rationale and progress to the Ad Astra Multi-Academy Trust, aligning with the Trust’s vision of “stars in the making” and ensuring that the music provision at Rosebrook Primary School is of the highest quality.
Addressing Inspection Feedback
The Charanga music curriculum directly addresses the areas for improvement identified in the most recent Ofsted inspection. By providing a well-structured and progressive scheme of work, the Charanga programme will ensure that teachers can build pupils’ knowledge and skills in music step by step, addressing the lack of precision in the school’s foundation subject curricula.
Furthermore, the Charanga resources include a comprehensive scheme of work for pupils’ personal development, which will help to address the need for a more secure understanding of local risks and the skills required to deal with them. The music curriculum will contribute to the school’s overall efforts to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to keep themselves safe and become responsible citizens.
By implementing the Charanga music curriculum, Rosebrook Primary School will be able to provide a high-quality, progressive, and engaging music education that meets the needs of all our pupils and aligns with the school’s vision, values, and improvement priorities.
