Maths Curriculum Rationale
At Rosebrook, our maths curriculum is designed to provide all pupils with a deep, secure, and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts and skills. We believe that a mastery approach, where the majority of pupils progress through the curriculum content at the same pace, is the most effective way to ensure that all children gain a firm grasp of mathematical principles and can apply them in a range of contexts.
Our Maths curriculum is fully aligned with the National Curriculum, ensuring that all statutory content is covered across the primary phase. However, we go beyond the minimum requirements, aiming to provide an ambitious and aspirational learning experience that challenges and extends all pupils, regardless of their starting points.
The Maths curriculum at Rosebrook is tailored to the specific needs and characteristics of our school community. We recognise that many of our pupils enter school with weaker language and mathematical skills than would be expected nationally. As such, we place a strong emphasis on building a solid foundation in number sense, fluency, and problem-solving, ensuring that all children have the necessary building blocks to access more complex mathematical concepts as they progress through the school.
Our curriculum also reflects the high proportion of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) at Rosebrook. We are committed to providing a fully inclusive Maths education, with a range of targeted support and adaptations to ensure that all children, regardless of their individual needs, can access and engage with the learning. This includes the use of concrete resources, visual representations, and scaffolded tasks to support those who require additional assistance.
Furthermore, the Maths curriculum at Rosebrook is designed to address the key priorities identified in our school improvement plan. This includes a focus on improving reading comprehension standards, as we recognise the crucial role that language and literacy play in mathematical understanding. We also aim to close the attainment gap between our disadvantaged pupils and their non-disadvantaged peers, particularly in Key Stage 1 and the combined Reading, Writing, and Maths measure.
Whole School Aims
The Maths curriculum at Rosebrook is fully aligned with our school’s vision and values, which are embodied in our DREAM core values: Determination, Respect, Enthusiasm, Ambition, and Growth Mindset. Through our Maths teaching, we aim to instill these qualities in our pupils, encouraging them to approach mathematical challenges with resilience, perseverance, and a willingness to learn from their mistakes.
Our school’s vision, which states that “we can be whatever we dream,” is reflected in the aspirational nature of our Maths curriculum. We believe that every child has the potential to excel in mathematics, and we are committed to providing them with the support and opportunities they need to achieve their full potential.
Subject Vision
At Rosebrook, we teach Maths because we believe it is a fundamental subject that underpins success in many areas of life. We recognise the importance of developing strong mathematical skills and understanding, as these are essential for problem-solving, critical thinking, and navigating the complexities of the modern world.
Our intent for pupils learning Maths is to ensure that they develop a deep, secure, and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts and skills. We want our children to be able to apply their knowledge in a range of contexts, to reason mathematically, and to communicate their ideas effectively. Ultimately, we aim to foster a love of Maths and a sense of confidence and competence in the subject, so that our pupils are well-equipped to succeed in their future endeavours.
This vision for Maths learning aligns closely with our school’s improvement priorities, particularly in the areas of reading comprehension, oracy, and attainment in Maths and the combined Reading, Writing, and Maths measure.
Communication with Stakeholders
To ensure the successful implementation of our Maths curriculum, we will engage in clear and regular communication with all stakeholders, including parents, carers, and the wider school community.
We will share our Maths curriculum rationale and vision through a range of channels, such as the school website, Class Dojo, and parent information sessions. This will help to ensure that everyone understands the principles and aims that underpin our approach to Maths teaching and learning.
Furthermore, we will provide regular updates on the progress and attainment of our pupils in Maths, highlighting the impact of our curriculum and the steps we are taking to address any areas for improvement. This transparent communication will help to build trust and foster a collaborative partnership between the school and our families.
Addressing Inspection Feedback
The Maths curriculum rationale at Rosebrook directly addresses the key points raised in the most recent Ofsted inspection feedback.
Firstly, we have ensured that our Maths schemes of work are planned precisely, with a clear sequence of learning that builds pupils’ knowledge and skills step by step. This aligns with the inspector’s recommendation to “check how effectively teachers are building pupils’ knowledge and skills for all aspects of foundation subjects, so that pupils learn more and remember more.”
Lastly, our Maths curriculum places a strong emphasis on developing pupils’ problem-solving and reasoning skills, in line with the inspector’s observation that “Pupils make good progress in mathematics, and were enthusiastic about their mathematics lessons.” We are committed to providing our pupils with ample opportunities to apply their mathematical knowledge in a range of contexts, further enhancing their understanding and engagement with the subject.
