Curriculum History

History Curriculum Rationale

At Rosebrook Primary School, our history curriculum is designed to foster a deep understanding and appreciation of the past, both locally and globally. Aligned with the National Curriculum for history, our curriculum aims to inspire pupils’ curiosity, equip them with essential knowledge and skills, and empower them to make connections between historical events and their own lives.

Whole School Aims

Our history curriculum is underpinned by the school’s overarching vision and values. The “All Roads Lead to Rosebrook” theme reflects our commitment to ensuring that our pupils develop a strong sense of place, identity, and belonging within their local community, while also gaining a broader understanding of the wider world.

Our DREAM core values – Determination, Respect, Enthusiasm, Ambition, and Growth Mindset – are woven throughout the history curriculum, encouraging pupils to approach their learning with a positive and resilient attitude. By nurturing these values, we empower our pupils to become confident, inquisitive, and responsible citizens, prepared to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world.

Subject Vision

At Rosebrook, we believe that the study of history is essential for developing well-rounded, knowledgeable, and socially aware individuals. Through our carefully sequenced history curriculum, we aim to:

  1. Foster Historical Curiosity: We want our pupils to develop a genuine interest in the past, asking thoughtful questions and exploring the diverse perspectives and experiences that have shaped our world.
  2. Build Chronological Understanding: By establishing a clear chronological framework, we help pupils understand the connections between different eras and events, enabling them to make sense of the complex and often non-linear nature of history.
  3. Develop Critical Thinking: Our history curriculum encourages pupils to engage in critical analysis, evaluate sources, and draw their own conclusions about the past, preparing them to navigate the complexities of the present and future.
  4. Promote Inclusive Narratives: We are committed to ensuring that our history curriculum represents the diverse experiences and contributions of people from a variety of backgrounds, empowering our pupils to see themselves reflected in the stories of the past.
  5. Connect Past and Present: By exploring the links between historical events and contemporary issues, we help our pupils understand the relevance of the past and its ongoing influence on the world around them.

Communication with Stakeholders

To ensure the successful implementation of our history curriculum, we will engage in clear and consistent communication with all stakeholders, including parents, carers, and the wider community. This will involve:

  • Sharing our curriculum rationale and intent through school newsletters, website updates, and parent-teacher meetings, emphasising the importance of history education and its alignment with our school’s vision and values.
  • Inviting parents and community members to participate in history-themed events, workshops, and field trips, fostering a sense of shared ownership and investment in the curriculum.
  • Providing regular updates on pupils’ progress and achievements in history, celebrating their successes and highlighting the impact of the curriculum on their learning and personal development.
  • Seeking feedback from stakeholders to inform ongoing curriculum review and refinement, ensuring that the history curriculum remains responsive to the needs and interests of our school community.

Addressing Inspection Feedback

The OFSTED inspection feedback highlighted several areas of strength in our history curriculum, including the well-planned progression of knowledge and skills, the effective use of assessment to support pupil progress, and the strong focus on developing pupils’ vocabulary and conceptual understanding.

To address the areas for improvement identified in the inspection, we will:

  1. Strengthen Curriculum Coherence: While the schemes of work in core subjects are well-developed, we will work to ensure that the foundation subjects, including geography and science, have equally precise and coherent curriculum plans. This will involve regular review and refinement of the history curriculum to ensure that key concepts are taught effectively across all year groups.
  2. Enhance Personal Development: The recently introduced personal development curriculum will be implemented consistently across the school, equipping pupils with the knowledge and skills to navigate local risks and develop a strong sense of personal safety and resilience. The history curriculum will be leveraged to support this initiative, exploring themes of community, citizenship, and social responsibility.
  3. Promote Inclusive Narratives: Building on the inspection’s recognition of our pupils’ enthusiasm for writing, we will further strengthen the history curriculum’s focus on diverse perspectives and inclusive narratives. This will involve the careful selection of resources, the incorporation of local and global histories, and the facilitation of discussions that challenge traditional historical accounts.

By addressing these areas for improvement, we will ensure that our history curriculum continues to meet the needs of our pupils, aligning with the school’s vision, values, and improvement priorities, and providing a high-quality educational experience that prepares our students for success in the future.
